What is Reflexology?

It is a complementary holistic therapy which uses massage and pressure points on the foot to stimulate a response in the body. It uses the idea that the body and its organs are mirrored in the feet. It is a sensitive therapy that can pick up on past and present issues, along with emotional and physical imbalances in the body.

Reflexology is based on ideas that the foot mirrors points in the body. Stimulating these pressure points on the foot can affect the corresponding area on the body. These areas are identified by mapping the body into ten zones, five on each foot, which run from the toes down to the heels. There are also 5 transverse zones.

Reflexology can be tailored to support couples trying to conceive, both naturally, and using assisted conception. It used specific and structured protocols to assist fertility health for men and women. It aims to assist any underlying conditions, regulate menstrual cycle and improve sperm production.

How does it work?

There are many theories on how this works including:

  • The u bend/lactic acid theory, since the feet are at the extremities of the body waste is trapped there. By massage and stimulation, they can be unblocked so that flow is unrestricted.

  • The meridian theory. This derives from the Chinese idea of energy flowing in the body, any blockages cause imbalance’s and disorders in the body. Foot massage can open these blockages

  • The nerve impulse theory. It is believed that there are 7200 nerve endings in the feet. Nerves are all connected and it is the brain and spinal cord that sends out signals. It is thought that by stimulating the feet nerve endings these pathways can be cleared and made more efficient.

Reflexology is a holistic treatment that aims to:

  • Be deeply relaxing - letting the parasympathetic nervous system work and promote healing.

  • Reducing the body’s need for excessive or unnecessary adrenal response.

  • Work with the body, mind and spirit to promote healing.

  • Improves the cardiovascular and lymphatic circulation.

  • Overall it aims to create a homeostasis, which means all the organs in the body are working together and at their best.

Who is it for?

  • Reflexology can bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.

  • Reflexology is suitable to all ages.

  • It can help you to cope with physical and emotional stress.

  • It encourages the body to heal.

  • It can help alleviate tension.

  • Above all it is incredibly relaxing, so enjoy the experience.

Typical Session

As the treatment comes to you, I bring all the equipment, including a reclining chair. I suggest that you have the room free from distractions that is well ventilated at a temperature that is comfortable for you. We all love our pets, but please make sure they are not going to disturb your session! If you have any relaxing music to play, put this on.

On your first treatment there will be a short consultation, this is so that I can create a treatment plan tailored to suit you. This should last about half an hour. You then move onto the reclining chair and get comfortable. You will need to take your shoes and socks off. A short foot analysis will be completed, then the treatment will start. The treatment will take 50 minutes. I use a range of waxes as a massage medium, these are of high quality and you are able to pick one to suit you.

During the treatment the body will be relaxing and responding to the treatment. This YouTube clip shows a typical session. You may have reactions during the session (which are all natural) these include:

  • Being hot or cold
  • A change in mood
  • Sweating
  • Light headedness or dizziness
  • A feeling of hunger or thirst
  • Feeling a tingling or a warm sensation
  • Laughing or crying

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take?

The first session includes a short consultation, where I take details of your medical history. This should take half an hour. The treatment lasts for 50 minutes.

Why do you need a consultation?

This is so that I can tailor the treatment to your neads. It also helps me to plan further treatments.

How many sessions would I need?

This depends on your aims for the treatment. Ideally I would suggest 4 to 6 weekly treatment, then reviewing and moving down to fortnightly and then monthly. This it totally up to you.

Do I have to undress?

You remain fully clothed, all you need to do is remove your shoes and socks.

Is it painful and does it tickle?

Reflexology is a non-invasive treatment, there maybe areas on your feet that are tender, but the treatment should not hurt. Please say something so that I can alter the treatment or the pressure that I use. Occasionally it can be ticklish, however by changing the pressure this will be elevated. I have treated many people with ticklish and sensitive feet who have enjoyed there session.

What's the process?

After the consultation, you move to the reflexology chair and take of your shoes and socks. I then tip the chair to its backwards position and make sure you are comfortable. I will clean your feet using ecological sourced wipes, then greet your feet and put wax on them. You get a choice of wax. I have industry quality moogwax of different aromas, including plain. I also use a locally sourced chocolate massage cream. The treatment starts, I work on each foot alternatively.

What conditions can it help?

Reflexology has been used in Chinese medicine to treat a wide range of complaints. It is a complementary holistic medicine that can work alongside conventional medicine.

It can help with restoring balance and circulation within the body, reduce stress and promote general wellbeing.

I have training working with clients who are trying to conceive.

Do you do sessions in people's homes as well as in your consulting rooms?

I am a mobile service, bringing everything to you.

How much does it cost?

A foot treatment costs £30. Treatments for specific conditions, such as fertility reflexology, are more. Payment is best before the treatment, so that you don't have to worry about anything afterwards except relaxing. It can be done with cash, cheque or bank transfer.

Why does a Neals Yard Pamper party cost nothing?

At a pamper party you have a talk about the Neals Yard Products, a look through all the products and get to try samples, which is great. I do a free facial and a free demonstration reflexology session. If anyone wants a reflexology taster after that they pay £5. You then get the chance to bug products. The Host gets a FREE GIFT!

What conditions are contraindicated? Is it safe?

Reflexology is a non invasive treatment that is safe for many conditions. There are a few conditions that I will not be able to treat you. These are:

• Undiagnosed sever pain, this should always be diagnosed by a doctor.

• Organ transplants, since reflexology tries to bring about homeostasis it may cause drugs to not work or for the body to reject the “foreign” body.

• Aeroplane flights

• Diarrhoea/vomiting

• Unstable heart conditions

• Haemorrhage. This needs medical attention.

• Drugs/alcohol. These will affect the reflexology treatment.

• Deep vein thrombosis. Reflexology might dislodge the clot which then might move around the body.

• Medical tests or procedures. Reflexology might interfere with these processes.

• Gangrene. Since this is the death of tissue this needs medical attention.

• Fever

• Localised contradiction affect a small area which should not be worked on. These mainly include cuts, bruises, and fractures on the foot area.
